On September 28, 1996, the Taliban hanged Afghan President Dr. Najibullah.

6 Mezan 1375 (September 28, 1996). Club of the city of Jabal us-Siraj (one of the bases of Ahmadshah Massoud).
... The sun rose, and it was about eight o'clock in the morning when Omir Sahib (Ahmadshah Masud) ran in all directions to gather several commanders and create a line of defense in some places of Bagram.
When he gathered two commanders together to gather other commanders, the formers tried to hide from his eyes (no one wanted to go into battle).
This was repeated several times. The inconsistency of the commanders irritated Omir Sahib even more, and he secretly ordered the signal group to transfer long-range stationary communications to Panjshir.
He ordered one of the secretaries to instruct helicopter pilots to transfer Ustad Rabbani and Hekmatyar to Takhar.
It was an interesting scene. Applicants for Ustad Rabbani's escort were a large number of ministers and those surrounded by the late Ustad, but Omir Sahib ordered Hekmatyar and Barekzai (the former Minister of Health) to be taken to the helipad along with Ustad Rabbani. The desperate struggle of a large number of ministers and so-called leaders to travel with the late Ustad and his inability to take them with him was an interesting and shocking spectacle!
When Omir Sahib released the car with Professor Rabbani to the helicopter parking area, he noticed Syed Asadullah Mashkuri, who was in charge of Dr. Najib's security.
Seyyed Asadullah, leaning against the wall of the club, saw Omir Sahib and wanted to stand on his feet when Omir Sahib approached him and asked: “What did your guest (Dr. Najib) decide”?
Seyyed Asadullah Mashkuri quoted Dr. Najib in a calm accent:
"Go give Massoud my regards and tell him I'm not a coward."
Omir Sahib was saddened by the words of Dr. Najib, shook his head regretfully, and said:
“He made a mistake... He made a serious mistake. I didn't think he was such a naive person. He thinks the Taliban will appoint him as defense minister or division commander. What he doesn't know is that the Khalqis and the ISI (Pakistani Inter-Services Intelligence) are at the forefront of the Taliban's march on Kabul. He acted badly by not coming... He will be destroyed.”
About half an hour had passed after Omir Sahib's conversation with Mashkuri when the news came of the hanging of Dr. Najib. No one dared to tell him this news until one of the members of the group of his guard squad (commandos) did it. Omir Sahib wearily asked, "What happened to Ahmadzai (Najibullah's brother)"?
They told him that they killed him too.
However, at that moment, Omir Sahib was presented with several versions of how the incident occurred. But he paused for a few moments and said: "Nothing else can be expected from these savages."
Notes:
- General Seyyed Asadullah Mashkuri, praise be to Allah, is still alive and a few years ago he served as deputy chief of security for government officials.
